Wester Kames Castle

Standing close to Kames Castle, Wester Kames is a small 16th century tower house of some magnificence. It has all the appearances of a smaller version of Elcho Castle in Fife and has been perfectly restored.

There is little history associated with this fabulous tower house.

Access to the castle from the road is down a small farm track where you will eventually arrive the castle, where you can park with consideration to take a few photo’s from across the hedges that surround the castle.

A gorgeous tower house well worth visiting if you are on the Isle of Bute.

~ History ~

The lands of Wester Kames were originally held by the MacKinlays, but are forfeited to the Crown following a squabble over an archery contest. The lands are granted to the royal butler, a MacDonald.

In time the property isaquired by the Bannatynes and then through marriage to the Campbells, and later to the Grahams.

After eventually becoming ruinous the castle is restored by the Stuart Marquess of Bute.
